This page exists to help you locate ingredients for rituals and spellcraft.
It is organized in sections:
• The top of this page is a discussion/explanation/exploration of how to shop for magical materials. Remember: sometimes finding the ingredients is part of the spell. (If you just want the links, then just scroll down.)
• Below the text are two lists of links for vendors of botanical and magical goods:
The first list is organized by country of origin (US, Canada and so forth) and descriptions of their wares.
• The second list is organized by types of goods: hydrosols, magic inks, dried herbs and so forth.
• Finally there is a list of links to independent magical shops so that hopefully you can locate stores near you.
Have fun shopping!
Among the joys, mysteries and challenges of spell-casting is gathering materials. The level of difficulty involved in obtaining materials often depends on the type of spell you’d like to cast:
• Some spells require only items found in even the least well-stocked food market (sugar, salt, and pepper for instance)
• Some spells require items one can collect for oneself: dirt or rain-water, for instance.
• However, there are, of course, also spells requiring more exotic materials: herbs, oils, specialized candles, for instance. By definition, some are not easy to find.
It is vital to appreciate that gathering materials for your spells is part of the spell-process itself. Consider whether materials are found readily or are a challenge to obtain. The universe (or the powers that be) may be sending messages to you regarding your spells. Quite often, the right materials magically appear at the right moment. Sometimes you’ll know it’s the right moment because the right materials appeared.
Remember:
• Don’t be afraid to improvise.
• Treasure those items one had to struggle and search to locate.
• Don’t ignore or underestimate those items that found you or magically made their presence known.
• Consider gathering supplies as a quest or spiritual journey.
If you can, it’s usually a good idea to begin your quest for magical materials close to home. Merchants who sell botanical and/or occult supplies (and they are NOT always the same) are pioneers who cannot exist without support from their communities (and the same applies to independent book sellers, a truly endangered species.) Your local merchants cannot survive without local customers. As they do not have the advertising budgets of large chains, they are not always easy to locate. A list of links to local magical stores is at the bottom of this page: locations are indicated.
*** Remember: the more personal focus and effort invested in spell-casting (including locating materials) the more personal magical energy generated.
The Witches Voice is an excellent resource to help you locate and communicate with local merchants: www.witchvox.com
Also, for occult/witch supplies, especially in urban areas try searching in the local phone book under Occult, Botanica, Religious or Spiritual Goods.
If you can’t find materials locally (or if you just enjoy shopping—all the following sites are wonderful), the following are sites that either I can personally recommend or that come highly recommended by other readers.
• Many sell whole-sale as well as retail.
• Although they are organized here by country of origin, don't let national boundaries limit you: most will ship internationally.

Independent Magical Stores
We are very blessed to live in the 21st century, a time when one can discreetly buy magical & metaphysical books and products through internet sources, allowing almost unlimited access to people, products and resources located at a distance from us. HOWEVER independent magical stores provide a unique service to both the magical community and to the individual student of the magical arts. Nothing else replaces them.
Independent magical stores include witch stores, occult shops, botanicas and stores specializing in spiritual and magical books and products. They provide us with a community. They create communities for us. In addition to selling books and magical supplies, many also provide seminars, classes, demonstrations, author events and opportunities for likeminded people and kindred spirits to meet and mingle. Many (though not all) of these businesses are owned and operated by practitioners. All are owned and operated by people with a commitment to the magical community, magical practice and the diffusion of magical/metaphysical/occult knowledge.
For decades, these stores were the only outlets for magical supplies and books. Not too long ago, no mass chain or mainstream bookseller would carry occult books. They wouldn't touch them. If there wasn't an independent magical store near you, you'd have to mail order from one.
It is very difficult for independent merchants to remain in business these days. Many have fallen by the wayside. I returned to the East Coast in 2001 having spent 11 years living in California only to discover that all the old New York City stomping grounds of my youth had disappeared: the late, lamented Samuel Weiser's Books, Magickal Childe, all gone.
Rents are high and ever-increasing, profits are low, independent merchants are often financially unable to match the lower prices offered by mass chains or more mainstream outlets BUT these stores provide more than just goods. No, they can't always match the discounts found elsewhere but the consumer receives something very special for those extra couple of dollars: these independent magical merchants provide personalized information, instructions, recommendations, friends, classes. They offer a helping hand and usually access to an experienced practitioner. They are the hearthfires of the magical community. Those who live in areas without these merchants miss them terribly; an internet or mass chain purchase is not the same nor is it an adequate substitute. So, support your local merchants. They can't exist without our support. They have made a commitment to our community so, in turn, let's make a commitment to their survival.
Below is a list of independent magical merchants and their websites organized by area: see if you can find one near you. Check out their websites, visit the stores: they stock books and carry all sorts of spellcasting supplies. And if you don't see what you're looking for, ask the proprietor: many will help you locate what you need.
If you are a magical merchant with a website, please e-mail me so that I can add a link.
